Vintage Glam: Elizabeth Taylor Makeup Tutorial

It’s time to get 1950’s glam with this Elizabeth Taylor-inspired makeup tutorial.

Elizabeth Taylor Makeup Tutorial

Elizabeth Taylor is, needless to say, one of the most classic, revered, admired beauty icons in the history of Hollywood. She was the epitome of Hollywood glamour as she made sure to never be photographed without her hair or makeup looking as put together as the sets she worked on.

In today’s look, Lisa Eldridge, a celebrity makeup artist just as iconic in her field as Taylor was in Hollywood, recreates the actress’ signature 1950’s look complete with bold red lip and dramatic winged liner.

While the entire look is more suited for Halloween, elements of it can be toned down for a vintage-inspired nighttime look.

Let’s get started!

Step 1

Start with a thin layer of L’Oreal Infallible Foundation (Porcelain 15) over the entire face.

Step 5

Now we’re on to the liner. Using Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 24h in Intense Black, Lisa creates a thick line starting from the outer edge of the eye and paints it 3/4 of the way into the eye. While doing this, she works the product into the roots and lashes.

Step 6

Once you’ve created your line, map out your winged flick. Lisa calls this flick more of a “kitten flick” in that it is very soft and delicate. We’re going to go over this line with liquid eyeliner in a bit.

Pro Tip: Gel liner is the best way to outline a winged eyeliner shape. It allows more room for error and will enhance the staying power of liquid liner when used as a base.

Step 7

After mapping your eyeliner, bring the winged line to the bottom lashes and trace the lower lash line to the center of the eye. We’ll buff this line soon.

Step 14

After this, curl the lashes and apply mascara. The mascara used in this tutorial is Lancome Hypnose Drama in Excessive Black. If you’re going to apply falsies, now’s the time to do them.

Fun Fact: Elizabeth Taylor was born with two sets of lashes!

Step 15

Now we’re going to move on to the eyebrows which is one of the most important parts of this look. Elizabeth Taylor had bold eyebrows with a dramatic arch so we’re going to be recreating that with two eyebrow pencils and powder.

You’re going to first map out the eyebrows with a pencil that closely resembles your natural color. Lisa uses Stila All Day Precision Glide Brow Pencil in Medium Brown. The shape you’re going for is a high arch with a dramatic plunge.

Step 16

After creating your shape, you’re going to fill the brows in with a darker brow pencil and set it with powder. With a damp q-tip dipped in makeup remover, clean up the bottom edge of the brows and create a nicely rounded shape.

Step 17

Now you’re going to go over the eyebrow with a dampened eyebrow brush for depth. If you want to keep your brows natural, that’s definitely an option. This will look over the top, so go with what feels most comfortable for you.

Step 18

With a matte bronzer, we’re going to do a light contour. Lisa uses Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzing Powder in Sheer Blonde and lightly applies it near the hairline and on the outer edges of the face to warm it up. Also apply it under the cheekbones for a slight contour.
